Nanotechnology is widely regarded as the next stage in the industrial revolution with applications across a whole range of areas from health to energy to environment.

However issues regarding the health and environmental risks of engineered nanomaterials have given rise to increasing concerns for regulators, the public and for the industries which may develop and use these materials.

These issues which have been extensively discussed include modified and often raised toxicity associated with decreasing particle size, the potential to translocate (to cross biological boundaries) and the possibility of increased exposure to workers and the public associated with widespread use of products containing these materials. Despite extensive research efforts, many important questions remain unanswered about the specific health effects which may be associated with different types of nanomaterials, the levels of exposure which can be considered to be safe and how expose is best measured and controlled.  These uncertainties represent a major barrier to innovation based on these technologies limiting the extent to which these materials have been exploited through the value chain. Hence major potential economic benefits resulting from materials, processes and products based on nanomaterials have been or may be lost or at least significantly delayed. International approaches to solving these problems recognise that that nanotechnology risk is a multidisciplinary and multidimensional problem. These approaches include improved sharing of data and methods through international collaboration, multidisciplinary projects and contextualizing of programs within specific value chains of regulatory regimes.

The nanOsing consortium brings together these multidisciplinary skills to help to solve these questions and support nanotechnology innovation in Singapore.


Successful innovation requires that the products are safe to humans and the environment from development through use to end of life. For nanotechnology based innovation, ensuring this requires potential risk issues to be identified and resolved throughout the value chain for these products.  By developing and applying appropriate solutions the pathways to responsible innovation are opened.

NanOsing is a multidisciplinary collaboration of prominent leading research and consultancy groups in Singapore who are dedicated to developing and applying world class multidisciplinary science for the assessment of health and environmental risks of nanotechnology in Singapore, by integrating such knowledge with the innovation chain and supporting the development of nanotechnology based processes, materials and products.
